My work opens up questions of the relationship between humans and animals within the urban environment. As most people still feel the need to escape the city in order to experience ‘nature’, we forget the forms of ‘nature’ that surround us, thus leading to question what is ‘nature’ and where does it stand in our culture? Cats and rats are my focal point as they are animals that are considered as both pets and pests. As humans, we have selected certain animals and domesticated them, however the feral animals that live among us in the city are considered as vermin and a nuisance. This evoked thoughts as to why we treat wildlife like this? Why are we so offended by the presence of rats and other feral animals?
