The Starzl is a comic series chronicling the daily lives of diverse characters afflicted with various long-term medical conditions.
My recent practice creates an innovative platform to take readers on a light-hearted journey of stories shedding light on chronic illnesses such as liver disease, issues that are not often discussed within the wider public arena.
Considering the relationship between Arts and Health, the work seeks to ignite further discussion; raise awareness of organ donation. It also attempts to address evasive and negative attitudes towards sensitive issues such as health and the body. It also addresses more general themes, for example: life’s battles and satirical social commentary.
Distributing the comics in hospital wards might help alleviate fears and improve patient experiences. It might also be shown in a gallery setting where it probes the intersection between Fine Art and Design.
