Whilst visiting Port Arthur in Tasmania I found the subject of women being transported for mostly petty crimes a very interesting subject matter to investigate. I began collating online records from a number of differing boats with the data being in its “rawest” form of handwritten records of the period. In order to develop an information design project, I proceeded to collate, organise and analyse the records into a meaningful set of data for graphic presentation. Here shows the final outcome of a newspaper insert, depicting several different statistics and representations of the fields I focused on including their ages, occupations and the overall crime vs. punishment rates.
